Return of the Will

Okay, I can’t ignore my blog anymore. Too much BMW stuff going on! And of course, I am always looking for Will Friedle, my favorite man in the entire universe. Here are some things I’ve collected over the week. :0)

Found an awesome Will Friedle Podcast Interview!!

Here is a video from Good Morning America of the Boy Meets World Cast Interview

I just want to say to the people who were saying things like, “Where’s his neck?” for Will’s picture he took when he visited the Girl Meets World taping, you are crazy. He’s shrugging his shoulders. He will always be beautiful to me. I’ve been missing this man for years and someday, I hope to meet him. I don’t even care if he’s walking around in Crocs and sweatpants. I love him. ^_^

Also saw this adorable trivia interview he did with Lily Nicksay.

That is all *SQUEEEEEE*

First of all, let me say that you, the fans of Boy Meets World, have been awesome. That word is often used incorrectly by people, including myself, on a daily basis but you have truly been awe inspiring. You, yes, even YOU, are the reason that Girl Meets World WILL BE MADE. J

I do not know how many BMW cast members will be returning for GMW, or how often they may appear if and/or when they do appear. I am going to do my best to not speak for others with this open post. But because I have known Michael Jacobs, Ben Savage, Rider Strong, Will Friedle, and Bill Daniels for 19 years, I know we share many of the same feelings regarding the 7 wonderful years we spent making BMW. Those years were among the most warm, hilarious, insightful, educational years of my life and I wouldn’t trade them for the world. Another thing I wouldn’t trade for anything is the integrity and the heart with which BMW was made. I promise with the entirety of my heart that we will make GMW with the same honesty, innocence, and intelligence that you learned to expect from BMW.

I say this because making the decision to do the show involved more conversations than you can possible imagine. These conversations were with the same people I mentioned above because they were all instrumental in creating and maintaining the heart of BMW. The first comment out of every person’s mouth was, “Let’s only do it if we think we can create something as special as we did with BMW.” When the news leaked that GMW was in the making, literally days after I first heard about the project myself, Michael Jacobs and I had a conversation and we talked about how we were both so blown away by the reactions from all of you. We felt honored. We felt nostalgic. We felt touched by the excitement in your comments, tweets, Tumblr, and Facebook posts. But most of all, we felt inspired. We felt inspired to bring these characters back to life and to tell you more of their stories. Michael said to me, “Danielle, when I read what people say BMW meant to them it makes me so very proud of all of us. I think it is important for us, for as long as we are fortunate enough to have this opportunity to do GMW, that we all look each other in the eyes every so often and make sure we know we have something of value to offer the audience.” I think we have that with GMW.

I say that so that I can say this: GMW is a new show. It isn’t BMW brought back to life but in current day. It will have familiar faces, familiar themes, and familiar messages. It will also have new faces, new themes, and new messages. BMW never spoke down to the audience and we are going to do our best to never do that with GMW. But please keep in mind that this there will be episode 1, of season 1, of a brand new show. We started at the same place with BMW but we evolved and we evolved quickly. For those of you who knew and loved BMW, please allow this show to evolve as well. Stick with us. Give us a chance.

In the meantime, a sincere thank you to every one of you for all of your tweets (I read them all, every day. It killed me not to be able to talk about it!), even those of you who asked us not to do it. There were only a few of you but I know why you don’t want GMW to happen and I appreciate that BMW meant enough to you that you don’t want to see its legacy tarnished. I can assure you, we don’t want that either. Your love, dedication, and appreciation means more to us than you could ever know and it will be the driving force behind our passion to make the best show we can possibly make. Thank you for giving us the chance to do it again.

Love,

Danielle

Girl Meets World: Hmm…Okay.

Disney is making a sequel to Boy Meets World called Girl Meets World. It was announced last weekend. After hearing the news, I couldn’t decided. I’ve been wavering back and forth over this topic this whole week. I don’t know why. It’s not even that important. I’ve been reading & watching articles, tweets, comments, rants, blogs, vlogs, video responses, and episodes of Boy Meets World that ended up making me cry like a baby. I was looking for something to influence my opinion and help me get out of this 50/50 zone that I was so conflicted over for some unknown reason. So finally, after being overwhelmed with all the positive vs. negative words I’ve seen, read or heard, I’ve come to a conclusion and that conclusion is this: okay.

It will be okay. It will be okay that Disney wants to do a sequel to Boy Meets World because there can be nothing but good that will come out of it for Boy Meets World. First of all, BMW is done, finished, in the past, a memory, a retro vintage television show that taught me life lessons and made Fridays my favorite day to this day. As a loyal viewer of Boy Meets World, I am honored that one of my favorite shows was remembered and chosen to get a sequel. A lot of the nay-sayers have voiced their rants that “Girl Meets World” will ruin their childhood and drag Boy Meets World through the ground. They pretty much say that Boy Meets World cannot be touched because it is already imperfectly perfect and does not need to be changed. And then, there are those who are overcome with excitement and & anticipation, like being given a big wrapped present and you have all these expectations and hopes for what could be inside.

Sigh…well, I have to admit, I was leaning more towards the “Don’t do it, Disney!” side but I took a step back and thought about all the ways I could see this so okay, here goes my final opinion. I think the nay-sayers should concede, withdraw & support. I think that there are only two outcomes here for us 90s kids who include BMW as a part of our childhood world: 1) If Girl Meets World succeeds, great! I’d be so proud of Michael Jacobs for having another successful show. Translation: Nothing really to do with Boy Meets World, they are two separate shows. They just happen to have the same creator. The other outcome is 2) If Girl Meets World bombs, it really has zero negative effect on Boy Meets World because again, they are two separate shows. If GMW fails, we will just say “Boy Meets World” was better, giving our childhood a boost in cool factor. Think of all the shows that didn’t get revamped, remade or even remembered. They’re pretty much stored up in a locked up trunk of the sitcom library that sits in all of our 90s brains, keys lost and never found. We are lucky to possess the nostalgic memory of BMW and I proudly support Michael Jacobs in creating a new one for the new generation that awaits to possess such a memory of their own.

Honestly, one show really doesn’t have anything to do with the other. They could have marketed this as a completely new show and not mention BMW at all but I feel like they are giving BMW a shoutout, a nod, a well-deserved notable form of recognition if you must. So for me, that’s okay. In the world of creativity, you have to take risks. Like Austin Kleon says, “Steal like an artist.” In this case, perhaps Disney is only borrowing, but eventually, we will get it back and in the same condition, you will see.

My favorite episode is……
Eric Hollywood. If you haven’t seen it, the payoff is in the end. I love that broken wall.

Okay, this one too. The ironic part is that they said Eric made an ugly woman. HA!

Disney Channel Eyes Boy Meets World Sequel Series

I’m not sure how I feel about this, Disney, but let me just say this. When Boy Meets World came out back in 1993, it was a different time. Shows were more family-oriented and wholesome. We were in a whirlwind of campy family shows like Home Improvement, Full House, Step By Step, Roseanne, Just the Ten of Us, Growing Pains, I can go on. Today, most of popular television consists of reality TV shows that romanticize partying in skimpy clothing, teen pregnancy, the zombie apocalypse, and body obsession. While these types of dramatic issues are not what I would want my child to deal with, I understand that there is a need for a show with a character they can relate to and look up to.

We learned life lessons through Cory Matthews, his family and friends. His world was built by making mistakes, building memories, and having regrets. I was a bit older so my experiences related more towards Eric Matthews, a character I most looked forward to seeing every Friday night on TGIF. (Oh Will, wherefore art thou, my love?) All I ask is that we not have Girl Meets World result in a complete mimic of Boy Meets World because it just wouldn’t work. Audiences are a different generation today.

If this new show fails, somehow I fear that it will taint the legacy that Boy Meets World has left behind which has a fond impression on me. On the up side, I have to admit, a part of me was excited that the world had not forgotten dear little Cory Matthews. It’s been 12 years since Boy Meets World went off the air. While some shows are easily forgotten as a memory tucked so deep in the depths of our minds that they are never mentioned again (Hey Dude, Too Close for Comfort, Benson, etc), Boy Meets World has developed a cult following, a new audience, and has been revived with a 2nd life by today’s generation through its syndication on ABC Family. Not to mention, there is a tight-knit BMW GIF community that revolves around Boy Meets World. Were you aware of that?

One good thing I’ve come to discover is that the project will be done by Michael Jacobs, the original creator of Boy Meets World. Let us all breathe a sigh of relief. To Michael, all I have to say “Please allow your voice to be heard and don’t let Disney corporates bully you into making their version of your vision.” As torn as I am about this new project, I would still watch it today, even as an adult. And of course, I’d be hoping to catch that glimpse of uncle Eric popping in every now and then, doing a Feeny call at the most random moment.

In the meantime, let’s enjoy this fun video of Ben the Savagest…

Watsky’s Making an Album Episode 9 with Special Guest Star

ComiCrazy

This year, I had the pleasure of going to my first Comic Con in San Diego. This is not a review of Comic Con, just a summarization of my experience. This was a birthday trip for my friend, Cheryl. I went with two of my BFFs, Cheryl & Marianne, and out of the three of us, I’d have to say I had the best time. I had gone to Wondercon back in April so I felt that that experience really prepared me for Comic Con. I made it a point to make this trip work for me so I looked through all the programming and found all the events I wanted to attend.

In order to avoid any kind of meltdown, I was prepared to stand in lines and sit through panels I wasn’t interested in so that I catch the ones that were of interest to me.

Key events I wanted to see were:
1) The Dungeon Master screening at the SDCC International Film Festival
2) The Thundercats premiere
3) Photoshop CS5 Demo
4) Comic-Con Film School 102: Production
5) Comic-Con Film School 103: Working with Actors & a Crew
6) Cartoon Voices II panel
7) An Evening with Kevin Smith

I caught all of these except for the Kevin Smith program because I had to choose between Kevin Smith or Photoshop as they were happening concurrently. Really glad I chose Photoshop because I learned a LOT. Now I have to get the program and start using it.

Anyway, the thing that really made this event for me was seeing The Strong brothers & their short film again and meeting Danielle Fishel & Jason Marsden. If it hadn’t been for them, I wouldn’t have considered my first Comic Con experience to be so spectacular. Reason being that I grew up seeing their faces on my TV, especially with Boy Meets World. Considering I had a Boy Meets World marathon(twice), for my birthday this year, it makes it even more special to see them in person. My heart is truly content right now.

The best part of seeing Rider & Shiloh was that I was shocked that they recognized me. After the Dungeon Master screening, Shiloh came up to ME to say hi. How weird is that?? I guess I should give them more credit. I told him I didn’t even think he remembered me. I didn’t take a photo with them because they were wearing the same thing they wore at the Sonoma Film Festival where I first met them and I didn’t want to embarrass them by posting a pic with the same outfit. Hey, we all have our “Go to” outfits. :O) I gave Shiloh a hug and he thanked me for his support but really, I should be thanking him and Rider. Their passion for creativity really inspires my own creativity as well. Marianne gave me the idea of asking Rider to sign my copy of Whiskey Island, a literary publication from Cleveland State University that published a short story that he wrote. I actually just brought it for Marianne to read. I didn’t think of getting it signed because I don’t usually like to ask for autographs but I thought it was a great idea so I asked anyway.

I walked around the floor and watched artists do demonstrations of their imagination. This one artist said that whatever creativity you want to make, just do it. When you are fueled by your passion to create something you think is beautiful, chances are, there are going to be other people who will also find your art beautiful. That hit home for me. I’ve never been the type of person to toot my own horn, to give myself credit, or to reveal the products of my creativity. I’ve been lectured over and over again about this by fellow artists but have still been unable to accept it. A good example is when my friend failed to put me down as Assistant Director in the credits for a video we shot & I was completely okay with that. However, the artist in me came to her senses and added my credits to it. Another example was when I was an understudy for a short stageplay and at the 1st rehearsal, the director, who is a fellow artist I truly admired and respected, said “Ava! You’re a REALLY GOOD actress!!” I was in complete disbelief and it was difficult for me to take her compliment. Why, I don’t know.

So after this weekend of being around so much art, magic & technology, I’ve decided to take my imagination, blow it up, and spread my ashes wherever there is a place for them. Whether it be monologues, scripts, jewelry, drawings, puppets, acting, films, comedy, etc., I’ll take responsibility; I’ll give myself credit; I’ll love it, own it, & work it.

Okay, I went off on a tangent. Back to Comic Con. I also wanted to meet Danielle Fishel and knew she was going to be at the Dungeon Master screening so I took a photo with her. God, I wish Comic Con had come 2 weeks earlier when I was 5 lbs. lighter. It really shows for me and I hate that. Damn gravity, you’re killing me! Anyway, Danielle was a sweetheart, she loved my NKOTB sweater. She was with Lea Palmieri, who is the producer for “Cocktails with Patrick” on Cosmo Radio. Lea was a sweetheart too.

On Sunday, I was able to attend the Cartoon Voice II panel (thanks to a generous friend) and see Jason Marsden in action. I had always wanted to see that in person and it was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience! They did an example of a cold read with Snow White & The 7 Dwarfs and it was so titillating to watch live. I can see why these actors fell in love with voice acting. It could have been my imagination but I thought Jason waved at me in the beginning of the panel but then I thought, “There’s no way. He doesn’t even know me. Is there a famous person sitting behind me? Who is it?” But when I went up to him after all the crazy autograph hungry fans dissipated, the first words he said to me were “Hey Ava!” On the inside, my eyes got 10 times as big, my heart dropped to the floor and my brain exploded. I couldn’t believe he knew my name. He’s so much cooler & down-to-earth than I expected and I truly appreciated it, but my mind still thought, “OMGWTF! *THUD*” Hahaha! But luckily, I’m celebrity-jaded so all I could muster out was a smile and an undercover enthused “Hey.” How’s that for acting? No one knew that the younger me on the inside was jumping up & down, running all around in fangirl status so I’d say……WINNING! I later found out from Twitter that he was indeed waving to me so now, I feel like an asshole for not waving back. Hope he at least saw me smile. I had so much I wanted to say to him, questions I wanted to ask him but I kept getting interrupted by other people who wanted to talk to him. Ah well, that’s just the way it is and I was used to that. At least my wish came true!

I also got to check out The Aquabats show at House of Blues because my friend Amy, who works for The HUB Channel hooked us up with tickets. They are a very entertaining band, I must say, complete with spandex costumes, masks, and theatre-like superhero shenanigans onstage. Other highlights included delicious meals at Extraordinary Desserts, Cafe Zucherro, and Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza. Oh, and of course, the famous San Diego carne asada fries!! Got them at Santana’s, which is now Fresh MXN Food. Yes, had a dose of that at midnight and LOVED it!! Getting hungry just thinking about it. I also went shopping at a couple of bead stores & bought supplies (because y’know, might as well do business if you’ve got the chance).

The lowlights of my trip were:

1) feet were killing me. I need a foot massage now.
2) Will didn’t come. Too bad because I was ready to let him pound me into the ground. (hey, I’m allowed to throw my mind in the gutter every once in awhile.)
3) umm…that was pretty much it so nevermind. :O)

Here are some pics. Enjoy!

B-day Marathon

For my birthday this year, I wanted to do two things: see Michael Ian Black perform live, and have a Boy Meets World marathon with my BFFs. I did get to see Michael Ian Black perform a Viva Variety reunion at SF SKetchfest on 1/29/11 and it was fabulous. I also got to see Kerri Kenney, Ben Garant, and Thomas Lennon in person, what an absolute dream. I had such a great time!

Since we had President’s Day, I decided to do the Boy Meets World marathon this weekend and my BFF was completely down for it even though I was sick. We didn’t start it until late Sunday evening and began with Season 4. I didn’t know if we would make it to Season 7 but we tried our best. In the end, we only got through Season 4 & just 2 episodes short of Season 5. I laughed, I cried, I gasped, I screamed-well, I didn’t REALLY scream. Eric Matthews screamed but I’m just going through the motions with him. :0)

To be honest, I don’t know why I ever stopped watching the show. I guess it was because I was growing up at the time along with Cory Matthews and Shawn Hunter and while I did indeed love Will Friedle with all my heart, I just did not want to stay home Friday nights watching television. Subsequently, I missed so many episodes that I now realize I wish I didn’t. So many valuable lessons, heartbreaks, good times, good television-no, it was GREAT television. Today, I don’t even watch TV anymore because all I see are drunk people causing fights, catty women throwing things at each other, boyfriends & girlfriends getting caught cheating, ridiculous competitions, etc. Boy Meets World didn’t need all the stupid fights, drama, and competitions to get kids to watch their show. Kids watched it on their own and they learned oh so much. The show dealt with so many issues that could prepare a kid for an adult life and it was so beautiful watching Cory Matthews, Shawn Hunter and Topanga Lawrence grow up before our eyes on TV. The best feeling was when Cory & Topanga got back together, when Eric stood up for Cory, when Shawn realized he wanted to be with Angela, and when Eric got accepted to Pennbrook.

It was a great weekend. It was like I was having my own version of a slumber party with Will Friedle. Sigh…a girl can dream, can’t she? Anyway, here are some of my favorite screencaps.

Cory losing a bet to Shawn

Eric looking smart in front of a laptop

Shawn & Cory bromance

Shawn looking hot as a woman for the sake of good journalism

Eric and his pantene hair

And lastly, my favorite: Angry Eric, sooooo hot.

Happy Birthday to me!

Boy Meets World – Season 5 Release!!

Maybe this is a little bit dorky but I’m so excited to hear that Lionsgate is releasing Boy Meets World – Season 5 on May 3rd!!! Ohhh…who am I kidding, I’m not embarrassed to be excited, I’m proud! I didn’t think it would happen but it is! Extras haven’t been announced but I sure wish some kind of commentary would be included, or even interviews or bloopers! Either way, I’m happy about it and I can’t wait to see Will Friedle’s face on TV again! I’m also excited to see Will’s favorite episode, “The Witches of Pennbrook”. I read it somewhere that he said that was his favorite episode to tape. And Candace Cameron guest stars in it! Another episode I want to see is “And Then There Was Shawn,” the Halloween episode where Will’s then-girlfriend Jennifer Love Hewitt guest stars as well!

Check out the cover art!
